The optimal gear ratio is determined by dividing the input speed of the motor by the target output speed of the gearbox. However, the calculation must also take into account mechanical efficiency (typically 65% to 90% depending on planetary/spur stage counts), radial loads on the output shaft, and the necessary safety margin for starting torque vs. holding torque.
Planetary gearboxes offer high efficiency, dense torque-to-volume ratio, and low backlash, making them ideal for precise micro-positioning and robotics. Worm gearboxes, on the other hand, provide self-locking safety configurations and a right-angle output profile, which is highly desirable in vertical actuators and kitchen appliances.
